as the curator, designer & editor of motherlore magazine & a creative mother of two little ones, i am currently deeply acquainting myself with the interconnectedness of mother nature and mothering, following amazing writers like lucy jones,

, liz berry and robin wall kimmerer, who all explore ideas of mothering and caregiving as doing and being that have been rooted in nature and community for millenia.

this space

with moss & milk, i offer creative thought & inspiration, particularly for your writing practice & particularly to mothers and carers, as i take my place within the patchwork of those who have inspired and held me during my matrescence journey. exploring birth, mothering, matrescence & postnatal depression, i currently work with the ideas below.

moss

just as moss grows without roots, we are often mothering, growing life, multiplying and transforming, without support – unrooted and uprooted, while deep in the domestic and creaturely motherwork of loving and raising our kind. despite moss’ rootlessness, “no moss can do it alone” (kimmerer); mosses require an interweaving, communal relationship with their surroundings to continue their daily work and to thrive.

milk

milk – part of the very meaning behind the word mammal – is embedded in our species; “all of us started our lives as milk drinkers, of one kind or another … milk is where we all began” (The Weaver with Joanna Wolfarth).

i have also begun exploring the idea of the milk line (those who are not in your blood line but have played or are playing a nurturing role for you), as a way to widen relationship and reciprocity.

mycelia

this space is here to become another thread in the network of mothers, carers and all those who nurture on this earth, in any sense or form, mirroring the mycelial network: an underground, almost invisible, shared and interconnected economy.

mycelium (incredibly tiny “threads” of the greater fungal organism that wrap around or bore into tree roots) make sure their wider community have all the resources that they need.
